One major difference between the two apps is that VMWare appears to get a lot of this stuttering over with proactively - it may lock up or even appear to have crashed with stuttering audio as the game first loads up, but smooths out much more quickly whereas Parallels will load the game faster but you will experience more consistent stuttering during gameplay. In some games, you can improve this experience by lowering the shader quality. Each game is affected by this to varying degrees, but the effect is usually the same: The performance will appear to be terrible at first, but if you continue playing for a while (anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more) it will smooth out. After that first time, that shader is cached and should no longer cause any stuttering. The first time you enter a new area in-game or perform an ability/action for the first time, the VM may freeze briefly. This is something that both applications suffer from, and you've probably experienced it if you've tried either before. So on paper, VMWare seems like the clear winner here. Even if performance is the same for any given game, with VMWare you'll be able to play on high or even ultra settings if you've got a good enough GPU. Even with the Pro version, you are still limited to only 2 GB of dedicated graphics memory in Parallels, which means even if your games run great, you'll probably be playing them on medium settings at best.įusion, on the other hand, is now free for noncommercial use, with no restrictions on resources, and lets you allocate up to 8 GB of memory for graphics, which makes a huge difference.

To get the full "Pro" version of Parallels, it's a $99.99 annual subscription. Parallels Desktop is $79.99 for the "home" license, which limits the amount of resources you can allocate to the VM.
